Vague assurances from the province that midwifery education in Northern Ontario will be revived are not doing much to comfort those dealing with the immediate impact of the program loss at Laurentian University.
Ross Romano, the minister of Colleges and Universities, said last week the “government’s priority is to maintain a Northern and bilingual midwifery program option,” but did not specify where this would take shape or how soon it might occur.

Research has shown that this negatively affects these students’ life outcomes, specifically in terms of their long-term career prospects and economic security.
