Joe Manning: His interest in people knew no borders

Don t miss the big stories. Like us on Facebook.
A man visits a town and there’s something about it he falls in love with. He has an eye for architecture, yes, and an interest in history, but what unfolds is his intense interest in the people of this green valley. He wants to hear and tell their stories.
In October, 1996, I was sitting in the little second floor office of the weekly Advocate on Spring Street in Williamstown, Mass. A man came in and said he was working on a project about nearby North Adams, my hometown. I was more than happy to talk to him on tape about growing up there. ....

Our Opinion: Like the history he preserved, Joe Manning won't be forgotten

For more than 25 years, Mr. Manning’s faith and optimism in North Adams never wavered.
NORTH ADAMS — Joe Manning, who observed, wrote about and cherished the city of North Adams for more than two decades, has died.
While Mr. Manning, of Florence, never lived in North Adams, he knew as much, if not more, about this city — from its people to its history to what makes North Adams “North Adams” — than any lifelong resident. Last week, Mr. Manning died. He was 79.
Mr. Manning first came to visit North Adams in 1996, lured by its realities and possibilities as an up-and-coming and revitalized community. He befriended the city at a time when its proud history and promising future were learning to become allies. And he quickly embraced both: He saw North Adams’ steeple-filled skyline and its horizon amid the development stages of the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art. ....

Joe Manning, Chronicler of North Adams, Dies at 79

Joe Manning turned his efforts to genealogy, identifying hundreds of mill children photographed a century ago by Lewis Hine for the National Child Labor Committee.
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. Joe Manning, chronicler of the heart and soul of the city of North Adams, died Tuesday, April 27, at the age of 79 after a short illness.

Manning first discovered the Steeple City 25 years ago and became a frequent and beloved visitor. The author, historian, genealogist, freelance journalist, poet, photographer, and songwriter made the city his spiritual home even though he never lived here.

His writings included Steeples: Sketches of North Adams, published in 1997 and featuring a collection of oral histories, photographs, essays, and poetry inspired by interviews and conversations with local people, Disappearing into North Adams, a personalized retrospective of changes to the former mill town, and a book of similarly informed poetry Gig At The Amtrak.   ....

Moriah Reads, 2020 Edition

On Friday, December 18, the final day of Chanukah, The Moriah middle school participated in their annual Moriah Reads Day. Being the 10th anniversary of the event, Moriah students revisited the novel “Counting on Grace,” by Elizabeth Winthrop, as it had for its inaugural event. Moriah middle school students dedicated their day to: “The Many Face of Grace,’’ and enjoyed a variety of cross-curricular activities connected to art, photography, history and Judaism. They started their day with Paint with Me! with Nikki Sausen. Delightfully, she engaged the students in painting Vermont, the setting of the book. She infused the idea that even though the lives of the children working in the mill were challenging, the beauty of the world can be seen through a proper lens. This was followed by a fun activity called Let’s Be Lefties where the students had to complete a variety of tasks with their non-dominant hand. This had them simulate the challenges the main character, Grace, h ....
