Council appoints O'Leary to fill vacant seat

PROSPECT â The newest member of the Town Council is looking to bring a more youthful touch to town government.
âI feel that I can bring a younger generational approach to municipal governance, which reflects the younger families moving into town and partaking in town activities,â Democrat Kevin J. OâLeary said.
The council Feb. 2 unanimously appointed OâLeary to fill the seat vacated by former council member Paul Murray, a Democrat whose resignation was effective Feb. 1. OâLeary, who was nominated for the seat by the Prospect Democratic Town Committee, will serve the rest of Murrayâs term to November. Council seats are up for election in November. ....

Chatfield to seek 23rd term as mayor

PROSPECT After 22 terms in office, Mayor Robert Chatfield says he still has work to do.
Chatfield, a 77-year-old Republican, announced Jan. 29 at his home on Cornwall Avenue that he will seek the Prospect Republican Town Committee’s endorsement to run for a 23rd term as mayor.
“I’m a high-energy person and I’m not finished,” said Chatfield, who will turn 78 in August.
Chatfield, the longest serving chief elected official in the state, was first elected mayor in 1977. He has held the seat since. ....

Murray resigning from Town Council

PROSPECT Paul Murray’s time on the Town Council is coming to an end.
Murray, a 62-year-old Democrat, is resigning from the council effective Feb. 1. The council accepted his resignation, with regret, Jan. 5.
Murray, who is retired, is the former owner Andrews & Murray Insurance Group. He also worked as the associate director of admissions at Quinnipiac University. He recently bought a home in Florida with his fiancee.
Murray said he’s been spending more time in the Sunshine State, though it’s not his primary residence. Murray has been able to attend council meetings online, since the council switched to virtual meetings due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But, he said, he doesn’t feel he can represent the town the right way if he’s going to be away for extended periods of time. ....

Truck catches fire Christmas Eve at company in Prospect

PROSPECT A Christmas Eve fire destroyed a dump truck at a landscaping company on Cheshire Road.
Firefighters responded to a report of a structure fire at Tice Lawn Maintenance, 103 Cheshire Road, at 5:07 p.m. Dec. 24, said Ed Malaspina, a firefighter and public information officer for the Volunteer Fire Department of Prospect.
When firefighters arrived on the scene four minutes later, Malaspina said smoke was coming out of a commercial garage that housed landscaping vehicles and equipment. He said firefighters went into the garage and found a landscaping dump truck on fire. ....

Naugatuck VFW remains dedicated to mission after 90 years

NAUGATUCK When the Naugatuck Veterans of Foreign Wars Crusader Post 1946 marked its 50th anniversary in 1980, the celebration started with a cookout on a Sunday and ended the following Saturday with a dinner party with events every day in between.
“That party lasted seven days,” recalled U.S. Navy veteran Paul Miller, 83, who was commander of the post from 1978 to 1981 and is still an active member. ....
