Seamus Heaney Donates Papers to Library of Ireland

The National Library of Ireland has become the new home to Nobel Laureate Seamus Heaney’s collection of literary papers.
“I’m overwhelmed at the number of people that the library has brought in to celebrate this moment and I’m deeply indebted and deeply honoured,” said Heaney at a reception held in the reading room of the National Library on December 21.
Among those who attended the event was Taoiseach Enda Kenny who said it was a privilege for the Irish nation to receive the archives of “one of the world’s foremost word sculptors.” ....

Portraits of Irish Writers in Boston

Over the past several centuries, a number of Irish artists have produced compelling portraits of Irish writers in painting, sculpture and photography, and now for the first time, those collected works are on view in the United States.
Entitled “Literary Lives: Portraits from the Crawford Art Gallery and Abbey Theatre, Ireland,” the exhibition is comprised of 49 works and runs through December 5, 2010, at Boston College’s McMullen Museum.
Peter Murray, director of the Crawford Gallery, Cork, and co-curator, explains that the show has a dual purpose:
“The works of art in this exhibition celebrate literary achievements, but they also celebrate the talents of Irish visual artists. The painters, photographers, and sculptors who created these portraits give an insight both into the writer’s world and also into the way in which they were seen by those around them.” ....

James Connolly Visitor Centre Opens in Belfast

At a ceremony on Friday, April 19, President of Ireland Michael D. Higgins officially opened Áras Uí Chonghaile, the new James Connolly Visitor Centre, providing a new space for discovery, education, study, work, meeting, and socializing on the Falls Road in West Belfast, only yards from where Connolly lived. Connolly, a labor leader, was executed for his part in the 1916 Rising. A James Connolly pageant parade assembled in Conway Mill, processed down Falls Road and arrived at the Visitor Centre, where Higgins then delivered a speech.
Included in the parade were hundreds of Trade Unionists from across Ireland, Britain, and the United States, proudly carrying their union banners. It also featured a brass band, historical period speeches, and women and girls dressed in mill worker costumes. ....
