Billie Everhart Garrett


Billie Everhart Garrett passed at her home on Tuesday, February 23, 2021 after recently being hospitalized for an extended period of time.
She is survived by her husband Rick; their son, Zach (Hannah); a precious granddaughter, Elana; an adoptive granddaughter, Emmilyse Hoilman; sisters, Jill Leonard (Andy), Tammy Yarborough, and Mary Spake (Carl); numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; and her cat, Muffin. Billie valued greatly her family, friends, and pets.
She was originally from Lexington, North Carolina and the daughter of the late Hazel Myers Everhart and Sam Eugene Everhart, Jr. She graduated from Lexington Senior High School and attended Davidson County Community College. She served in Raleigh as a Teacher’s Assistant with the Wake County School System after leaving Davidson County. ....

What is often left aside are the progressive battles that Daniels and his paper fought and often won in a deeply conservative state during the last century.
How could one of North Carolina’s most important political leaders be both a progressive champion for education and economic development and, at the same time, the leader of the white supremacy movement in our state? N.C. State Professor Lee Craig wrestled with this challenging question in his book, “Josephus Daniels: His Life and Times” (UNC Press, 2013).
Professor Craig struggled with this seeming contradiction: “I had to confront the fact that the most consistently progressive American political leader between the Civil War and the Cold War was also the father of Jim Crow.” ....

Wake parents weigh-in on bill that could require districts to offer summer school


RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) It s back to school for many families in Wake County this week.
Now, some students could be headed for summer school if a new bill passes through the General Assembly.
The Summer Learning Choice for Families , also known as House Bill 82, would require school districts to offer six weeks of learning recovery and enrichment after the school year ends.
The bill aims to mitigate the impacts of COVID-19 on at-risk students and to require the implementation of innovative benchmark assessments.
For students in kindergarten through third-grade, in-person instruction will focus on reading and math. There will be more focused science instruction for third-grade students. Students in fourth through eighth grade, in-person instruction will focus on reading, math and science as well as at least one enrichment activity. ....

Raleigh therapist says mental health crisis among kids is growing

It s been tricky for everyone, she said. We re all grasping and trying to figure out how not necessarily to do this successfully but to kind of get through it in a somewhat healthy way.
She s hopeful decision-makers can see the struggles both she and her own kids are going through.
In high school students she s treated, she s noted an uptick in anxiety, depression as well as suicidal thoughts. She said younger kids are acting out more, things are especially tough for kids with special needs. ....
