After spending $276 million on a recall attempt that accomplished nothing, the state's top elections official, Shirley Weber, is on a rhetorical warpath urging the legislature to change the lopsided rules. ....
an unwoke revolt where it s desperately needed. Revolt of the Unwoke In a Revolt of the Unwoke, three progressive San Francisco school board members are targeted for a recall. The targets are President Gabriela López, Vice President Faauuga Moliga and Commissioner Alison M. Collins. To force a recall election, pro-recall forces need 51,325 signatures for each candidate by Sept. 7. They already have more than half what they need, and say they now have the resources to hire professional signature gatherers for the rest. Polling shows 69% of San Francisco parents back the school-board recall far more than the 43% in a poll last week who support recalling Gov. Gavin Newsom in the election scheduled for Sept. 14. ....
Tweet The effort to recall three members of the San Francisco School Board is making some significant progress in gathering signatures. But the big news is that recent polling shows this recall has a real chance to succeed if it can make it on the ballot. Ruth Bernstein, CEO of EMC Research, outlined in a June 25 memo to “interested parties” some very worrisome numbers for the school board and the San Francisco Unified School District itself. Her numbers were gleaned from three separate polls of registered San Francisco voters, one conducted in February and two in May. They each surveyed 500 to 640 voters. The school questions were just part of polls about a range of city issues and were commissioned by “private business leaders” whom Bernstein wouldn’t name. ....
SF Legislators Call Bulls t on School District s Scheme to Get $12 Million In State Funding for Reopening San Francisco s legislative delegation in Sacramento is calling out the SF School Board for their attempt to reap the benefits of a state funding program without actually complying with the spirit of the legislation that backed the program. Assembly Bill 86 was signed into law back in March as an attempt by Governor Gavin Newsom and Democratic legislators to incentivize the reopening of schools in this school year. It required school districts in counties where there were fewer than 7 daily new COVID cases per 100,000 residents to offer in-person classes for all elementary school students and at least one grade of middle of high school by May 15, in exchange for a piece of the funding. As the LA Times noted at the time, the program still allowed for some discretion in districts where teachers unions were resistant to returning to classrooms, and the requirements were ....
Alison Collins sues school board for $87 million Share on Facebook John SextonPosted at 1:00 pm on April 5, 2021 Share on Facebook Share on Twitter For those who haven’t been following this saga, a recap. Alison Collins was the Vice President of the San Francisco school board. She supported the board’s effort to rename schools (based on shoddy research) and also voted to end selective admissions at San Francisco’s Lowell High School. Importantly, Lowell’s strict admissions had led to it being disproportionately Asian, and many Asian parents whose student attended were upset with the board’s decision. Some of the parents formed a group to oust Collins and two other members of the school board. They call themselves Recall SF School Board. About three weeks ago, that group was shown a thread of tweets which Alison Collins had published back in 2016. The old tweets contained some inflammatory comments about Asian parents and students. For instance: ....
