Candlelight Vigil Held for Homeless Man Shot, Killed by Police in Escondido

“Steve did not deserve what happened to him last week,” said Yusef Miller, homeless activist.
Family members were joined by homeless advocates, friends and other Escondido community members for a candlelight vigil at West 2nd Avenue and Broadway, where Steven Olson was killed.
“He fell on some hard times. He was down the wrong path but nothing he did deserve this kind of treatment,” Nicholas Olson said.
Many people in this group have protested in front of the police department several times since Steven Olson s death. They are asking officer Moore to be terminated and charged criminally.
So far, Escondido Police say an investigation is underway by the EPD crimes of violence unit and will be independently reviewed by the San Diego County District Attorney s office, U.S. Attorney s office and the FBI to determine if the officer s actions were reasonable under the law. ....

Capuano says she supports the police and knows they have a tough job. Some of her customers are Escondido Police officers, but she wishes the officer would have tried a different approach on April 21, like deploying a police K-9 to stop Olson in his tracks.
In the video released by Escondido Police, a police K-9 is heard barking in the background.
“A taser gun might be better,” said Hector Rodriguez, who told NBC 7 the officer didn’t exercise other options. “The force that he used compared to the force that the gentleman was able to use was not comparable. A crowbar and a handgun are different.” ....

Car Chase Driver Sought After Leaving Crash Site in Escondido

Escondido police were in search of a driver Sunday evening after they allegedly prompted a brief car chase before crashing their vehicle and taking off on foot.
The incident began shortly after 7 p.m. when authorities attempted to pull over a driver for an unspecified traffic violation. Rather than yield to police, the driver took off at what police described as a high rate of speed, according to Escondido Police Department Lt. Eric Witholt.

After a brief pursuit, the car crashed near the intersection of Broadway and 9th Avenue, where it was stuck for some time. ....
