Clyde Kull, the Estonian ambassador in Paris, has been summarily recalled from his duties; the Estonian Prosecutor’s Office said that it has launched criminal proceedings against the former ambassador.
The decree to call the ambassador back was signed by the Estonian president, Kersti Kaljulaid, on 20 May. In addition to France, Kull was representing Estonia as an ambassador also in Monaco, Tunisia and at the Paris-based OECD and UNESCO.
The Estonian foreign ministry confirmed the recall of Kull from his duties in Paris, but declined to give further comments at this stage, citing a criminal investigation by the country’s prosecuting service. ....

When the previous Estonian prime minister, Jüri Ratas – also the chairman of the centre-left Centre Party – resigned on 14 January, he did so because his party had yet again been suspected in criminal involvement in a corruption case; this wasn’t by far the first time the Centre Party – now again in the current government – has been suspected, and also prosecuted and found guilty, in corrupt deeds.
On 12 January, the Estonian Public Prosecutor’s Office announced it suspected the Centre Party and five individuals, including the party’s secretary-general, Mihhail Korb, were involved in a corruption case. ....

On 26 January, at sunrise – 8:44 AM to be precise – Estonia became the only country in the world that’s currently led by women: both the elected president, Kersti Kaljulaid, and the elected prime minister, Kaja Kallas, are female.
The keyword here, though, is “elected” – there are three other countries where the head of state and the prime minister are both women. New Zealand and Barbados are led by female prime ministers and their common head of state is the sovereign of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth – Queen Elizabeth II. Denmark is also led by a female prime minister; its head of state is another monarch, Queen Margrethe II. ....

Kaja Kallas, the leader of the Reform Party, has become Estonia’s first female prime minister; Estonia would thus currently become the only country in the world where both the president and the prime minister are women.
The Reform Party, led by Kallas, won the 2019 parliamentary election in Estonia with 34 MPs in the country’s 101-seat parliament, Riigikogu. However, the second most successful party in the election, the Centre Party – led by Jüri Ratas – went ahead and formed the government, instead.
In April 2019, with 25 MPs in the parliament, Ratas’s party formed the coalition with the conservative Isamaa Party (12 MPs) and the far-right and populist Estonian Conservative People’s Party, also known as EKRE (19 MPs) – the decision of which received a widespread criticism in Estonia and abroad. Since then, Ratas’s government experienced many scandals, mainly due to ....
