As a woman of color in a male-dominated field, biomedical engineer Anjelica Gonzalez strives always to remind and sometimes 
convince  students that anyone can make a career in science and technology.
For her efforts to promote inclusion and belonging in STEM, Gonzalez is one of four Yale faculty members to receive the inaugural Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) Dean’s Award for Inclusion and Belonging. The other honorees are scientist Andrew Miranker, historian Stephen Pitti, and James Tierney, a senior lector in English and director of the English Language Program. ....

Yale was not Gabriella Blatt’s first-choice college until she visited the Native American Cultural Center (NACC) during a trip to campus for Bulldog Days. That, she said, was a “game changer.” 
Blatt, who was accepted into seven Ivy League schools, was impressed that an entire building at Yale was devoted to Native student life. During her time at Yale the NACC became her anchor a fact, she says, that was ironic.
“In high school, I couldn’t wait to get off the reservation,” said the graduating senior, a member of the Chippewa Cree tribe who grew up on Rocky Boy’s Reservation in Montana. “At Yale, the Native community has been my beacon of support. I love my reservation and love being Indigenous.” ....

Udall Foundation honors students tackling tribal, environmental issues

The Udall Foundation has recognized three Yale undergraduates for their commitment to careers in tribal public policy, the environment, or Native health care, as well as their leadership potential and academic accomplishments.
Sophomore Joe Boland has been named a 2021 Udall Scholar in the tribal public policy category; junior Abey Philip has been recognized with a Udall Scholar honorable mention in the environmental category; and junior John Crawford has been selected as a 2021 Native American Congressional Intern. ....
