The Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre (TAC) says it will not offer any more words in the Tasmanian Aboriginal language palawa kani for dual naming purposes.
This week, Tasmania s Department of Primary Industries, Parks, Water and Environment (DPIPWE) announced that new Aboriginal and dual names had been approved for 15 places in the state.
But Campaign Manager with the TAC Nala Mansell said none of the newly approved names are palawa kani.
“Over the years we’ve thought it was important to share some of our language words with the general public, which is why we participated in the dual naming process, Ms Mansell told SBS News. ....

'Minor fine' for UK-based firm after destroying Wiradjuri artefacts

A Wiradjuri man has equated a $1500 fine for the destruction of hundreds of artefacts at a solar farm development to racial discrimination.
Mark Saddler said between 200 to 250 stone tools were destroyed by UK-based company METKA EGN at their solar farm site, north of Wagga Wagga.
Mr Saddler said the site has been used for generations as a place to make stone tools and that a fine of $1500 was not enough to make up for what had been lost.
What METKA have done is destroyed a Songline down here, they ve broken a Songline and $1500 is no good, Mr Saddler told NITV News. ....

Thousands of NSW land claims waiting to be processed & the number is climbing

The number of unprocessed Aboriginal land claims in New South Wales is continuing to increase, according to the latest Auditor-General s report.
There were 36,769 land claims in NSW waiting to be processed at June 30, 2020 – over 900 more than at the same time last year.
The number of unprocessed claims that had waited for more than 10 years from the time they were lodged had also increased by 10 per cent.
The Department of Planning, Industry and Environment said the backlog of claims continues to increase because of limited restrictions on the lodging of claims under the state legislation, the complexity of the assessment process, and lack of resourcing to manage these claims. ....

Was there a year in recent years where we needed books more? Of the many, many our book experts read this year, these are the ones that have lasted the distance; made indelible impressions; surprised and delighted. Enjoy them outdoors if you possibly can.
