Residents share firsthand accounts of how they are dealing with Summit County's affordable housing shortage

Summit County’s lack of affordable housing is a complex issue and one that community leaders and elected officials are scrambling to solve. Last month, the Summit County Housing Department laid out potential short-, mid- and long-term strategies to help mitigate the issue, and more recently, the Keystone Policy Center held a housing summit for stakeholders to brainstorm additional solutions.
Originally from Arlington, Virginia, Shaffer and her two sons moved to Summit County in July 2016. Upon their move, Shaffer said she and her family experienced one housing issue after another.
The first home the family lived in was a house in the Willowbrook neighborhood in Silverthorne. The family lived there for two years before their Denver-based landlord decided to sell the home. Silverthorne, Summit County plan for new child care facility

As the Silverthorne community continues to grow, so does the need for child care on the northern end of Summit County.
Silverthorne and Summit County officials recognized the need for additional child care and partnered to build a new center at the Smith Ranch Neighborhood.
Silverthorne Town Manager Ryan Hyland said having a child care facility by Smith Ranch has been a goal since the start of the project. Hyland said the project is in its planning and building programming phase, working with architects and developers on what the facility would look like. Based on the current timeline, construction would begin in spring 2022 with the building set to open in January 2023. ....

Local Head Start child care facilities to receive over $14,000

On Thursday, Rep. Joe Neguse’s office announced that Summit County Head Start child care facilities would receive more than $14,000 in federal funds.
In December 2020, Neguse and New York Rep. John Katko introduced the Jump Start for Head Start Act that “would address the estimated funding shortfall for Head Start grantees and would appropriate funds directly to Head Start programs based on enrollment ratio,” according to Neguse’s website

In addition to the $14,747 coming to Summit County centers, $22,272 will be going to facilities in nearby Eagle County
.
According to the news release, the National Head Start Association estimated operational costs for the program increased by up to 20% in 2020 as individual programs adapted and responded to the pandemic. Neguse said the funding would help address those issues. ....

3 to be interviewed for vacant Summit school board seat

The Summit School District Board of Education will interview three candidates for a vacant school board seat at its May 13 public meeting.
The school board will interview applicants Johanna Kugler, Phyllis Raynor and Lisa Webster. The district said in an April 26 memo to the school board that the three represent the only applicants qualified for the position due to the requirement to be a registered voter for at least one year within the district. Seven people applied.
In her letter of interest submitted to the board Kugler a Dillon Valley resident and mother of three Dillon Valley Elementary students said her experience and expertise in early-childhood education would benefit the board. ....
