GALESBURG After a year off, The Great Balloon Race is floating back into town. The event kicks off Friday, July 23 at Lake Storey Park at the soccer fields, just west of the baseball fields and runs through to dusk Saturday. It will bring food vendors, crafts, games and plenty of hot air balloons to town. It will also serve as a rain date of sorts for Art in the Park, which was rained out during Railroad Days, and several artists who had been set up for that event will be present in addition to the traditional balloon race festivities. Balloon Race president Greg Saul does expect it to be a bit smaller of an event than usual for this reason. ....

GALESBURG The Lake Storey expansion study is being taken off of the 2021 budget, following Monday night’s city council meeting. The decision, which will essentially end the planned study for the foreseeable future, was approved in a 4-2 vote, with one abstention, and one member of the council not present. In favor of removing the item from the budget were council members Wayne Dennis, Jaclyn Smith-Esters and Sarah Davis. Bradley Hix and Larry Cox voted against removing the study from the budget, while Dwight White abstained. Abstaining votes are added into the majority in Galesburg, bringing the vote margins to 4-2 in favor. Member Lindsay Hillery was not present. ....
The City of Galesburg Parks and Rec department has been busy firing up their facilities for summer. Since Saturday the splash pads at Kiwanis and Rotary Parks have been opened. Also open now is the Lake Storey Beach swimming area as well as boat rentals. Parks and Rec Director Tony Oligney-Estill says "Last year COVID brought insurmountable challenges to operating some of our normal recreational facilities." He adds that while this year has presented a few hurdles, the department's pleased that all of the typical summer facilities will be open this summer. Open starting Wednesday are wading pools at some City parks including HT Custer, ON Custer and Lincoln Park. Then this Friday Lakeside Water Park which was never able to open last summer will finally welcome guests. Patrons should note that until Illinois enters Phase 5 of the Restore Illinois Plan there may be modifications to the normal entry producer. Those changes might include reserved entry times. ....
