A TikTok sensation: Alaska town where residents live in one building

Imagine living with all your classmates and the majority of your town’s population under just one roof. Imagine your local post office, grocery store and police station being just an elevator ride away.
That’s Jenessa Lorenz’s reality, living in Whittier, Alaska where she and about 85% of the town’s roughly 300 residents live in one 14-story building.
After noticing Whittier trending on TikTok, Jenessa posted a tour of the building she’s called home for the past seven years. The video amassed over 14 million views.
“I made the video thinking, OK, no one’s going to care about a tiny, tiny town in Alaska. The next day it had millions of views, and I was in shock,” Lorenz told USA TODAY. “Our town’s Facebook group posted my TikTok on their page too.” ....

The former homeport to one of the U.S. government’s oldest survey vessels is scheduled for a long-overdue makeover.
The Ketchikan, Alaska, port facility became home in 2001 to the Fairweather, a ship that belongs to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). NOAA is an agency under the Department of Commerce. The port was condemned after a failed 2008 inspection.
NOAA has awarded a contract to Ahtna Infrastructure & Technologies LLC for a project to revitalize Ketchikan port, with work likely beginning later this month. ....

$18.7M contract awarded for federal dock facility in Ketchikan

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration on Wednesday announced an $18.7 million contract to renovate its Ketchikan dock facility to allow the research vessel Fairweather to homeport in Ketchikan, a project that has been in the works for nearly 20 years.
The project will include the construction of a new office building, a âlarge floating pier, steel access trestle, and updated power and water utility systems for servicing the Fairweather and other visiting ships,â according to a press release from Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan on Wednesday morning.
The project will be completed by Alaska-based Ahtna Infrastructure and Technologies LLC. Work on the project is expected to conclude by the end of 2022. ....
