State Supreme Justice Craig Doran announced Friday morning he would step down from his role as administrative judge for the Seventh Judicial District due to a photograph taken at Halloween party in 1988 in which I appear as a well-known public figure of color.
Doran made the announcement after he said this photograph began circulating. The photograph still hasn t surfaced publicly and it s unclear who Doran was portraying in it.
Doran made the unexpected announcement in a three-paragraph statement released by email Friday. He said he would continue to serve in his role as an elected state supreme court justice. The announcement caught many by surprise, because Doran has worked on numerous efforts to help local courts become more equitable.  ....

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) An email hit our in-box Friday morning that sent a shockwave through the entire legal system in Rochester.
The email said the highest-ranking judge in our area is resigning his leadership post because of a nearly 33-year-old photo of him at a Halloween party that has been circulated.
The judge is Craig Doran. As the administrative judge, he supervises every county, family, and Supreme Court judge in our eight-county region and hears cases.
It has come to my attention that a photograph taken of me at a Halloween party in 1988 in which I appear as a well-known public figure of color has been circulated, Doran s statement begins. I am deeply sorry for my decision to appear in this manner. I did not comprehend at the time the hurtful nature of my actions. I know now that an act of this nature is considered to be racist. ....

Seventh Judicial District Circuit Court Judge Don Elledge retired Wednesday, the end of June, after 16 years on the bench. The Seventh Judicial District is Anderson County. The Circuit Court hears both civil and criminal cases.
Elledge hadn’t aspired to be a judge, but when a vacancy opened up, he was encouraged to apply by others in the community, Tennessee Courts System said in a story about Elledge’s retirement.
“He was successful, and Governor Phil Bredesen appointed him to the bench in September 2005,” the story said. “Judge Elledge did not fully know at the time that he was about to embark on the most rewarding journey of his professional life.” ....
