An American climber was one of two people who died of exhaustion on Wednesday while summiting Mount Everest, the first reported fatalities of a climbing season that comes highly anticipated following last year s COVID-related shutdown.
Puwei Liu, 55, suffered from snow blindness and exhaustion while descending from Hillary Step, between the mountain at South Col and the summit, a spokesperson for Seven Summit Treks, which organized the expedition, confirms to PEOPLE.
An Instagram post from Chhang Dawa Sherpa that the spokesperson referenced said that two additional Sherpas were sent to bring Liu oxygen and food, but that he was unable to be saved, and died during his descent before he could reach the summit. ....

Two climbers, a Swiss-Pakistani and an American, have died on Mount Everest, the first fatalities of a busy climbing season as a second wave of the coronavirus batters Nepal.

The expedition company that organised their climbs, Seven Summit Treks, said both men were experienced mountaineers who lost consciousness around Mount Everest’s “death zone,” an area above 8,000 meters (about 26,000 feet) named for its thin air and brutal weather. ....

Kathmandu, April 25 : Nepali authorities have issued record number of expedition permits for Mt. Qomolangma, defying expectations of reduced number of permit issuance compared to past years amid Covid-19 pandemic.
The Himalayan country issued a record 394 permits for the Mt. Qomolangma, the world’s tallest peak by Friday, which broke the earlier record of 381 permits issued in 2019, according to the Department of Tourism, which issues such permits, Xinhua news agency reported on Saturday.
“We had not expected that such a large number of mountaineers would be climbing the Mt. Qomolangma in the middle of the pandemic,” Mira Acharya, director at the mountaineering section of the department told Xinhua on Friday. “This suggests the massive charm of Mt. Qomolangma among the mountaineers as well as their passion towards climbing the mountain desp ....
