On January 26, media people descended on the idyllic village Thekkampatti located in the western periphery of Coimbatore district. They had come to interview 105-year-old Pappammal, Thekkampatti’s well-known woman farmer.
Pappammal was one of the recipients of Padma Shri, the civilian award, that the government had announced. A few hours before the media came, she had been at her farm, watering her banana crops. When her 50-year-old grandson R. Balu told her about the award and the media’s presence, she expressed disbelief initially. ....

Popularise good agricultural practices for quality production of spices: Experts

The international symposium on spices has recommended the development and introduction of good agricultural practices and its popularisation among farmers to enhance the availability of high quality spices for domestic and industrial consumption.
The four-day symposium, which concluded at ICAR- Indian Institute of Spices Research, also recommended the introduction of good manufacturing practices for ensuring clean and hygienic spices. GAP can also improve spices exports, the virtual meeting observed.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Commerce should converge for the betterment of the spices sector, said experts and suggested studies on carbon footprint for spices and proper trade information management pertaining to spices sector. They stressed the importance of collaboration between institutes and countr ....

ICAR-IIHR’s open gerbera varieties can cut down on royalties to the European breeders
Anyone can grow gerberas, the decorative flowers, anywhere soon. Thanks to the ICAR-Indian Institute of Horticulture, Bengaluru, that has developed two new gerbera varieties that can be grown by farmers in the open fields, unlike in the greenhouse currently.
These two varieties have the potential to revolutionise the cultivation of gerberas, which are grown on about 2,000 hectares in greenhouses. Also, these two varieties can help cut down the royalty being paid by the Indian growers to breeders in Europe. ....

New farm laws will increase farmers profits: ICAR Dy Director General
Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) Deputy Director-General A. K. Singh on Monday said the new agriculture laws will help farmers to increase their income in a big way. Singh s statement comes amidst several farmers protesting on Delhi s borders since November seeking repeal of three new farm laws.
Addressing the annual Five-day National Horticulture Fair 2021 organised by the ICAR-Indian Institute of Horticultural Research (IIHR), Bengaluru virtually, Singh said that by eliminating middlemen, farmers will receive a larger share of profit for their produce.
These laws have great potential for horticulture crop diversification and farmers are going to realise a better price in the future, he contended ....
