After 36 years at the helm of the Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium, well-known curator and passionate space enthusiast Mark Rigby is retiring.
Throughout his career under the cosmic skydome at Mount Coot-Tha, Mr Rigby presented about 15,000 shows, inspiring an estimated audience of 1 million people.
Dubbed the Star Man by his colleagues, Mr Rigby said in later years his attention had turned towards Earth.
I must say that over those 36 years, as we ve looked out, towards the end I m looking more back, towards our own planet and the need to look after it, he said. ....

Brisbane has a planet named in its honour, thanks to the curator of the Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium, Mark Rigby, who is retiring after 36 years at the popular Mt Coot-tha astronomy centre.
The “minor planet” is asteroid 5277, first discovered in 1988 and named after Brisbane in 2009.
Lord mayor Adrian Schrinner said Mr Rigby had passed on an “extensive knowledge of the galaxy” to the people of Brisbane as he prepared to leave after more than 36 years. ....
