Des Moines Register: Iowa cattle producers are calling for a joint investigation by the U.S. Departments of Justice and Agriculture into the nation s largest meatpacking companies, saying they re using their market power to manipulate beef prices. Cattle producers find themselves hemorrhaging thousands of dollars while the top meat processors are making roughly $1,000 for each steer that s processed, based on market prices last week, the Iowa Cattlemen s Association wrote to U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, a former Iowa governor, in a letter Monday.
