Iowa bill limiting diversity training topics heads to Gov. Reynolds

View Comments
Neither classroom instruction at schools nor mandatory diversity training for government groups could teach certain concepts, such as that the United States is systemically racist, under a measure headed to Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds desk.
The bill places limitations on the ideas that could be included in diversity training at those institutions, resembling a now-reversed executive order that President Donald Trump signed last year to oppose critical race theory, which teaches that racism is interwoven into America s institutions.
Iowa Republicans have called critical race theory racist and said the bill would prevent student indoctrination.  Democrats have said the bill would have a chilling effect on needed discussions about racism and sexism, including concepts like structural racism and implicit bias.  ....

Proposed bill reduces Iowa Workforce Development unemployment benefits

Des Moines Register
Unemployed Iowans would receive less money from Iowa Workforce Development if a bill working its way through the Legislature is approved and signed into law by Gov. Kim Reynolds.
The Iowa House Labor Committee approved House Study Bill 203 early Tuesday. The debate was contentious and lasted more than 5 hours.
If you think this was a fight, wait until it gets on the floor, said Rep. Bruce Hunter, D-Des Moines, the party s ranking member on the committee.
The legislation is eligible for a vote on the House floor. If signed into law, the legislation would take effect in July 2022. ....

Iowa Legislature: Unemployment payments would drop under House bill

The legislation, which is now eligible for a vote on the House floor, would decrease the maximum weekly benefits that claimants can receive and require workers to wait a week after losing their jobs to begin getting unemployment compensation. It also would require them to accept lower-paying jobs than those they formerly held, potentially moving them off benefits faster.
In addition, the bill would cut a provision that allows claimants to receive standard unemployment insurance for 39 weeks if their place of employment closes. Those workers would instead receive benefits for the usual maximum of 26 weeks.
If signed into law by Gov. Kim Reynolds, the legislation would take effect in July 2022. ....

The paster of the Methodist church in Epworth says a Christmas miracle helped bring together plans for a drive-up Christmas Eve church service tonight.
Churches belonging to the Iowa Conference of the United Methodist Church are currently prohibited from holding indoor services through January 10th. Pastor Mike Jones told KCRG TV he had the idea to hold a drive-in service that would allow people to get together but also stay in the safety of their cars. He says it has been a long time since they have been together in the Epworth church. ....
