The Spirit Of Endurance | Irish America

“Am I the first Scots-Irish person on your cover?” Senator John McCain asks.
“Yes. But it’ s all the same DNA.” He doesn’t seem to hear me. He’s busy being photographed by Kit DeFever.
I’m about to tell him about Scotland being the only place the Irish ever colonized – the Scotti being Gaelic speakers from Ireland who settled in Argyle – but I stop myself. I’ve noticed in the past that, for a Scot, the news that Scotland gets its name from the Irish “Scotti” is equivalent to an Irish-American hearing that Al Smith was German (and that’s a story for another issue). ....

What did The Irish Times first say about some works of literature that turned into classics? We trawled the archive to find out
The Irish Times was founded in March 1859 and, more than 160 years later, is recognised for the quality and the quantity of the pages it devotes to Irish and international literature. Its deep engagement is reflected in the authors who have written columns for it over the years, among them Brian Friel, Kate O’Brien, John Montague, Maeve Binchy, Derek Mahon, Nuala O’Faolain, Stewart Parker and, most famously, Flann O’Brien.
Things got off to a rather sluggish start, however, as Terence Brown observed in his history of the newspaper: “Until the 1880s and 1890s there was little sense that Ireland possessed a literature of its own. This began to change, however, as what became known as the Irish Literary Revival began to make its impact on cultural life.” ....

March 10, 1810 | Irish America

March 10, 1810
Scholar and poet Sir Samuel Ferguson was born in Belfast on this day in 1810. Due to his interest in Irish legends and mythology, he is believed to be a forerunner of William Butler Yeats and the Irish Literary Revival in general. Ferguson studied law at Trinity University, where he supported by contributing to Blackwood’s Magazine, and by later writing for Dublin University Magazine. In addition to his writing, Ferguson practiced law as a barrister and was a respected antiquarian. He retired from the bar to become Deputy Keeper of the Public Records in Ireland, and in 1882, was elected President of the Royal Irish Academy. Many of Ferguson’s poems were written with both Irish and English translations. ....

admin – The Library of Trinity College Dublin: News & Alerts

A Library survey was launched College-wide today seeking feedback from all staff and students on their experience of using the Library.
The Library is at the heart of the University, providing services, resources, training and space. Its important role within the College community has been further highlighted over the past year during Covid-19. This is an opportunity for you to have your say in relation to your Library and how it can best support you currently, and in its future development.
The survey is being administered on behalf of the Library by an independent research agency called Alterline. The first survey, which ran in December 2018, received 2,540 responses across six core metrics. It is a biennial survey and in response to feedback received in 2018, the Library has embedded a series of additional services and resources across the Library. ....
