World Environment Day: The importance of biomethane for decarbonisation

gasworld this week in the lead-up to World Environment Day 2021, taking place on Saturday 5
th June.
Biomethane is seen by many as a vitally important part of our energy future, with various quarters keen to urge its long-term deployment. It’s part of a wider spectrum of renewable energies like biogas that are increasingly coming to the fore as the world strives for a more diversified and sustainable energy mix.
The trend towards higher natural gas prices, coupled with the demand for renewable energy, has recently created strong demand for both biomethane and biogas – and a number of industrial gas related companies are already involved in this embryonic space, particularly where the recovery and subsequent re-purposing of associated carbon dioxide (CO2) is concerned. ....

"Biomethane is the best solution right now" - Interview: European Biogas Association [Gas in Transition]

“Biomethane is the best solution right now” - Interview: European Biogas Association [Gas in Transition]
May 11, 2021 7:40:am
Summary
“To reach carbon neutrality in 2050, we need to start now with available and scalable technologies such as biomethane – not wait for other renewable gases, such as green hydrogen, to scale up,” say Harmen Dekker and Susanna Pflüger, Director and Secretary General of the European Biogas Association in an interview with Karel Beckman. The big European gas companies have discovered the potential of biomethane, they say, but EU policymakers still tend to focus on green electricity and hydrogen. MEPs Ask EC to Review Approach that Limits Biomethane-Fueled Mobility – Advanced BioFuels USA

(NGV Journal/European Biogas Association) Members of European Parliament (MEPs) from different political groups have signed a petition asking the European Commission to remove barriers to the deployment of sustainable fuels and technologies in transport by reviewing the current tailpipe approach to measure CO2 emissions. This will ensure the swift decarbonisation of the transport sector. The development of clean mobility will be essential to reach climate-neutrality. The sector needs to reduce its emissions by 90% in 2050, while ensuring that the EU transport industry remains competitive and the transition to clean technologies leaves no one behind.
The EU needs cost-competitive fuels and technologies available right now to achieve this goal. Biomethane belongs to the most promising alternative fuels: it allows emissions reductions already in the short term and by 2030, and its production promotes the deployment of a circular bioeconomy. When well-to-wheel emissions are tak ....

EBA comments on adoption of the EU Taxonomy by European Commission

The European Biogas Association (EBA) has welcomed the adoption of the EU Taxonomy yesterday by the European Commission as a means to channel investments towards sustainable activities across the EU. The decision to label the production of biogas from anaerobic digestion (AD) as a low-carbon activity recognises its valuable contribution to climate-neutrality, even though the chosen criteria are not fully aligned with the Renewable Energy Directive (RED). Biogas production enables greenhouse gas emissions savings in agriculture and waste management, as acknowledged by the Methane Strategy released last October.
The regulation also supports the role of biogas and biomethane in providing renewable heat and power and recognises the need to integrate ‘low-carbon gases’, including biomethane, in existing natural gas grids. This sends a positive signal to investors and operators across the whole energy value chain for further deployment of biogas and biomethane ....
