Burst of Protein Structure Predictions from DeepMind, EMBL

Burst of Protein Structure Predictions from DeepMind, EMBL
July 23, 2021
The tremors that shook the life sciences community last December were mere prelude. Back then, at a biennial protein-prediction competition, an artificial intelligence (AI) tool called AlphaFold delivered an outstanding performance, predicting structures quite as well as X-ray crystallography or cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM), the gold standard experimental techniques. Now, AlphaFold has produced an eruption: a release of more than 350,000 protein structure predictions. Besides covering nearly the entire human proteome, the release also extends to biologically significant organisms such as
Escherichia coli, fruit fly, mouse, zebrafish, malaria parasite, and tuberculosis bacteria.
The AlphaFold release was arranged by AlphaFold’s developer, DeepMind, and by DeepMind’s scientific partner, the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL). Both DeepMind and the EMBL contributed to two art ....

This New Database of Over 350,000 Proteins Will Change The Research of Life Itself

This New Database of Over 350,000 Proteins Will Change The Research of Life Itself

23 JULY 2021
Scientists on Thursday unveiled the most exhaustive database yet of the proteins that form the building blocks of life, in a breakthrough observers said would fundamentally change biological research .

Every cell in every living organism is triggered to perform its function by proteins that deliver constant instructions to maintain health and ward off infection.
Unlike the genome – the complete sequence of human genes that encode cellular life – the human proteome is constantly changing in response to genetic instructions and environmental stimuli.
Understanding how proteins operate – the shape in which they end up, or fold into – within cells has fascinated scientists for decades. ....

BBC recently reported on a new artificial intelligence breakthrough, which could lead to the potential development of cures for many diseases, including some of the deadliest ones known to man.
The feat was achieved by making AI predict the structures of almost every protein produced by the human body. A total of 350,000 protein structures have finally been predicted using an artificial intelligence program called DeepMind, which was implemented by a European Molecular Biology Laboratory team. The results of their study were published in the journal Nature.  ....

EMBL partners with DeepMind to predict 3D structure of human proteins

July 22, 2021 Google Health s DeepMind announced a partnership with the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) to offer the scientific community open access to the most comprehensive database developed to date of predicted 3D protein structures.
The free database includes more than 350,000 protein structure predictions based on 20,000 proteins expressed by the human genome. Determining how proteins fold and form their 3D structures is an essential step in determining their functions, which underpin every biological process.
The database was developed with artificial intelligence (AI) technology and is intended to help researchers across a variety of fields accelerate their work. A team at the University of Colorado, Boulder, for instance, is using predicted protein structures to study antibiotic resistance, while a group at the University of California, San Francisco is using them to elucidate SARS-CoV-2 biology, DeepMind said in a release. ....
