130 passengers were aboard a scheduled Delta flight from the USA that landed on Sunday. The airline’s first flight to Iceland since COVID travel restrictions began marked a small but significant milestone for the tourism industry. It was the first in a rapidly-expanding timetable to and from North America. Fully vaccinated travellers are exempt from Iceland’s quarantine rules as are those who have had and recovered from COVID-19.
The touchdown of the Delta Boeing 757 on Sunday marked the first scheduled passenger flights from the USA in roughly one year apart from Icelandair’s state-supported minimal service to and from Boston throughout the pandemic. ....

Icelandic Travel Industry Bouncing Back?

Icelandic Travel Industry Bouncing Back?

Morgunblaðið reports, quoting Jóhannes Þór Skúlason, managing director of SAF, the Icelandic Travel Industry Association.
“It goes without saying that if the travel industry bounces back a month or two earlier than expected, that will be a game changer,” he states. “There is more reason for optimism now than a month or two ago.”
Mainly, this is thanks to vaccinated tourists from the US, although the UK is rebounding as well, while elsewhere the response is minimal.
“There is no question that the decision to allow vaccinated people from outside Schengen to arrive [in Iceland] was essential,” Jóhannes states,” – so much that for many companies in this industry, it determines whether they sink or swim.” In addition, he adds, the government’s plan to ease restrictions, announced Tuesday, weighs heavily. ....

Restrictions unchanged and border plan on track

Health minister Svandís Svavarsdóttir says that the previously-announced colour-coded system of border controls will go into effect on 1st May as initially planned. This is the decision of the government. She also said on RÚV’s Kastljós programme yesterday evening that domestic contagion prevention measures will remain unchanged over Easter. The majority of the nation will be vaccinated by the end of July, it is hoped.
It is now more than a year since the pandemic gripped Iceland, along with most other countries, and today marks the one-year anniversary of assembly limits in Iceland. The government has implemented the chief epidemiologist’s recommendations almost to the letter throughout the pandemic and Svandís says that while there remains a great deal of solidarity, many people are unhappy under the ongoing restrictions and with the impact they have on most people’s private lives. ....

Neither certificates of vaccination nor certificates of antibodies for COVID-19 are accepted at Icelandic borders from passengers coming from outside the Schengen Area,
Morgunblaðið reports. The reason is the continued border closure of the Schengen Area, which comprises 26 European countries.
This means that the ever-growing groups of immunized tourists from the US, UK and China do not have access to Iceland. Those nationalities have in recent years made up the largest groups of tourists in Iceland. ....
