Black Investment Fund offering business grants


The One Albuquerque Fund a city-supporting foundation is administering the program funded with city money.
Nicole Bedford, a coordinator working on the program, said the grants are the first phase and will represent about $300,000 to $400,000 worth of spending.
Most of the rest will go toward a second phase that remains in development.
The next phase will be more program-based, Bedford said. It could entail training opportunities for business owners or investments related to arts, culture or even mental health. The Fund is presently soliciting feedback to help set the direction.
“We want the second phase to be as impactful as we can (make it) in the Black community,” she said. ....

City finalizing plan for $1 million investment in Black community

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. In the aftermath of George Floyd’s murder and protests against police brutality and racial injustice, Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller announced New Mexico’s largest city was setting aside $1 million to invest in the local Black community.
Nearly a year later, the city has not allocated the money, although that could happen soon.
The city’s Economic Development Department “is in the process of finalizing details of the program,” the city wrote in a June 1 response to a Journal public records request seeking information about how the money was used. “Additional information will be provided at the program launch during the 2021 Juneteenth Festival.” ....

Thieves steal equipment from local little league

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. A little league in the Albuquerque metro area was recently robbed just as they were starting back up again. 
Alameda Little League is the latest organization to be hit by thieves. This comes just a few weeks after the state announced that youth sports programs can resume. 
“All of our pitching equipment, pitching machines, our bases,” said Neal Santa Cruz, president of Alameda Little League.
“To them, it s monetary as far as I m concerned, but to our kids it s everything,” Cruz added.
Luckily, city officials are stepping up to the plate to help replace the stolen equipment.  ....
