Vigil Planned For Corrections Officers, Staff Who Died During Pandemic

Prisons and jails have been hit especially hard by the pandemic. At least 2,500 people who are incarcerated throughout the country have died. The virus also killed 218 corrections officers and 41 non-custody employees, according to One Voice United, a Michigan-based advocacy group for correctional officers and staff. The organization is hosting a virtual vigil Friday, where they will read the names of officers and staff who died. ....

Correctional staff in Hampden, Worcester counties are getting vaccinated at rates higher than the state, but vaccine myths persist

More than 60% of Hampden and Worcester counties’ correctional staff have agreed to in-house COVID-19 vaccinations, a rate about 10% higher than Department of Correction employees statewide. It’s a trend that’s helped multiple facilities slowly return to normal operations, including increased visitations and educational programming for inmates.
Prisoners and correctional officers in Massachusetts were among those included in the first phase of the state’s vaccination rollout.
But local officials say they’re still striving to stamp out vaccination myths and misinformation among correctional officers and inmates, even though the virus has infected more than 2,700 Massachusetts prison and jail workers and left 22 inmates dead. A Florida correctional officer polled his colleagues earlier this year in a private Facebook group: “Will you take the COVID-19 vaccine if offered?”
The answer from more than half: “Hell no.” Only 40 of the 475 respondents said yes. ....
