Having a portrait of someone whose execution you have ordered hanging on your wall might make one feel a little, well, uncomfortable.
And so it seems was the case with Charles I and this arresting portrait of Thomas Wentworth, 1st Earl of Strafford (around 1639-40) by Anthony Van Dyck which is coming up for sale at Christie s Old Masters evening auction in London on 8 July, estimated at £3m to £5m.
Strafford was a controversial and uncompromising character. Initially a parliamentarian, he was won over by Charles I and became one of his most powerful courtiers, acting as President of the Council of the North in 1628 and Lord-Deputy of Ireland in the 1630s before becoming chief advisor to the ill-fated king during his Personal Rule (without parliament) between 1639-41, just before the Civil War of 1642. The circus is coming to town this summer with a spectacular show promising audiences an ‘around the world’ experience.
Gandeys Unbelievable ‘Around the world in 80 minutes’ will be in Glazebury this June with an unforgettable fun-filled voyage for all the family.
The circus production company, which has received a grant from the UK Arts Council, usually pays a visit an annual visit to Junction 9 Retail Park but due to redevelopment work on the site, this year’s show will be on the A580 at Leigh Greyhound roundabout.

Selection of the exhibition is both rigorous and fair, where digital image and print work form part of the selection process and entrants remain anonymous throughout, including decisions on the award winners. 
We are very grateful to this year’s selection panel, for their time, expertise and insight.
Monica Alcazar-Duarte is a British-Mexican non-fiction photographer who lives and works in the UK. Monica s work often combines photography, with science and cutting edge technology which is anchored by meticulous research. In 2019, she was awarded the Lucie Foundation Chroma Luxe scholarship, a National Geographic Arena award, and exhibited ....
