LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 26, 2021) – When someone decides to give a person a second chance at life through living organ donation, there are a number of steps that have to be taken before the surgery. Blood tests, screenings, physical exams – just to name a few.
But one hurdle that many potential donors hit is not physiological – it’s bureaucratic.
Nationally, donors have been denied family medical leave. There have been cases where insurance premiums have gone up for insurance has been canceled, or they ve been denied long-term care, life or disability insurance. And that s an unfortunate circumstance to have to face after you ve done something so altruistic as to donate an organ. ....

UK Transplant Center Meets New Criteria for Pediatric Kidney and Lung Transplant

LEXINGTON, KY. (April 19, 2021) – The Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN), the regulatory body that sets policies and bylaws that govern the procedural aspects of policy development, allocation of donated organs and the collection of transplant data nationwide, has announced that the UK Transplant Center fulfills the criteria as a center for pediatric kidney transplant and pediatric lung transplants.
“Our mission is to help kids get back to being kids, so we are pleased the UK Transplant Center meets the criteria set by OPTN,” said Dr. Scottie B. Day, physician-in-chief at Kentucky Children’s Hospital. “This designation means we not only can continue to provide the best possible care for our young patients but to do so close to home.” ....

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Feb. 2, 2021) For Mark Patton of Louisville, there was bad news, followed by more bad news. But then, a spark of hope.
Mark had more than his share of health problems. In 1987, at the age of 25, he was diagnosed with Wegner’s Granulomatosis, an autoimmune disease and affects the blood vessels in the entire body. Patients with this disease have a higher risk of developing bladder cancer. In 2013, Mark was diagnosed with stage-three bladder cancer and had a complete cystectomy, a procedure in which the bladder is removed. ....
