One in 15 older teenagers have carried or used a weapon in the past year, a new study suggests.
Analysis of data from more than 13,000 17-year-olds in 2018/19 found that 6.4% said they had carried or used a weapon in the previous 12 months, compared to 3.7% of 14-year-olds.
Boys were twice as likely as girls to say that they had done so. (8.8% compared to 3.9%)
The information came from the UK Millennium Cohort Study that is following the lives of thousands of children who were born in the home nations in 2000-02. ....

ONE in 15 older teenagers have carried or used a weapon in the past year, a new study suggests, as three Bradford youths have been in court in the past two months for carrying a weapon.
Nationally, research found that from more than 13,000 17-year-olds in 2018/19 found that 6.4 per cent said they had carried or used a weapon in the previous 12 months.
Boys were twice as likely as girls to say that they had done so, with 8.8 per cent of boys saying they had compared to 3.9 per cent of girls.
Since April, three 17-year-olds – two boys and one girl – have been in court in Bradford for possession of a weapon in a public place, including a samurai sword, an axe and a knife, and in recent months a number of students have taken weapons into schools. ....

Emotional distress in fathers and mothers linked to heightened risk of overweight in their children

Distress experienced by mothers and fathers in the first few years of a child s life, particularly during infancy, is linked with accelerated weight and excess fat gain from age 5 to 14 years, according to new research being presented at the European Congress on Obesity (ECO) held online this year.
The findings also suggest that girls are sensitive to both mothers and father s self-reported distress during infancy; whereas boys seem influenced only by their fathers distress reported at 9-months.
We know the first few years of life are crucial for healthy weight development, however we don t know exactly which psychological and social exposures during the early years put some children at greater risk of developing overweight in later childhood , says Kristiane Tommerup from University College London, UK, who led the research. Our findings underscore how a lack of social, mental health, and socioeconomic support available to parents may have long-term health ....
