Longtime United Way Worldwide (UWW) President & CEO Brian Gallagher announced he will step down effective March 1. The announcement comes a week after an investigation found that the Alexandria, Va.-based national office did not engage “in actionable harassment, discrimination, or retaliation” with respect to three employees who filed complaints with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC).
A statement issued by UWW Board of Trustees Chair Juleiette Tuakli made no mention of the recently-completed investigation or other turmoil. In a letter to colleagues, Gallagher said he and the board had been working on a succession plan for the past two years. “We were actively working toward a transition for me sometime later in 2021 at the conclusion of a CEO search process.  But, I and the board think it’s best for United Way if I step down as CEO sooner.  It was important to me that I stay through this ....

More Former United Way Employees Say They Experienced Harassment, Discrimination

Lisa Bowman, former marketing chief at United Way Worldwide, at her home in Atlanta in November. She was fired in January 2020 by United Way Worldwide’s CEO Brian Gallagher, months after she made a formal complaint about the behavior of a male colleague, according to a charge she filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. 
More than 20 female former employees of United Way Worldwide have said that sexual harassment, discrimination and retaliation is commonplace at the nonprofit. In a letter sent on Dec. 22 to the chairs of the organization’s boards of trustees, the women also said their opportunities at United Way were limited because of their gender.  ....

United Way rewarded people who engaged in sexism, sources say

Leadership at United Way Worldwide, one of the largest nonprofits in the US, has consistently ignored allegations of inappropriate behavior, even engaging in bullying tactics to suppress women coming forward with them, nine former employees said.
These former employees accused the organization s CEO, Brian Gallagher, of working hard to preserve a boys club that excludes women and often promotes men who engage in sexist behavior.
Ex-employees also allege that the exclusion of female employees is facilitated by the organization s human-resources department, which is run by women. ....
