Aznavour would turn 97 today

The legendary crooner would turn 97 if alive.
Born in Paris into a family of Armenian immigrants, Aznavour chose singing art as his lifetime career after meeting with actor Pierre Roche in 1944.
His first concert at the Paris Olympia Hall in 1955 marked an important milestone, making headlines in the French media.
In 1974, Aznavour became a major success in the United Kingdom when his song She was number 1 on the UK Singles Chart for four weeks during a fourteen-week run.

The Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School swim team had a memorable night in the YMCA pool on Feb. 11 as both the boys and girls finished the season in top form competing in the virtual Cape and Islands League Championship meet. The Vineyarders posted one new school record, three state championship qualifying times, one sectional qualifying time, 15 personal bests and nine season best times. Overall, the boys placed third out of seven teams, while the girls finished fifth. ....

The MVRHS swim team had a busy week at the YMCA of Martha’s Vineyard, competing in back-to-back virtual meets against Nantucket and Nauset, plus the Vineyard half of a virtual meet with Barnstable on Monday.
First up, on Feb. 3, the Vineyarders swam against Nantucket. The Whalers defeated the girls, 118-26, and the boys, 93-46, but MV piled up an impressive 14 personal best times. ....

Timaru District Council buys Royal Gardens Restaurant building

The Timaru District Council has extended its property holdings along Stafford St with the $440,000 purchase of the building containing the Royal Garden Restaurant.
The purchase of 134-138 Stafford St is in line with council’s moves to create a Heritage Precinct as it begins a multi-million dollar upgrade of the Theatre Royal that will also see the South Canterbury Museum relocated to the area.
Council now owns a sizeable proportion of the lower end of Stafford St but at this stage has no definitive plans for the site, with group manager for commercial and strategy, Donna Cross, saying “there are a number of options for the property . ....

Building could be saved as Timaru development gets underway

The future of the building that houses the Factory Bar and Nightclub is up for discussion, as the council considers the Theatre Royal upgrade and Heritage Facility project.
One of the oldest buildings in Timaru could be retained in some form as a major development to upgrade the town s Theatre Royal and create a Heritage facility gets underway.
At Tuesday’s Timaru District Council commercial and strategy committee meeting, councillors will receive Christchurch-based firm Architectus’ design brief for the $23m project.
The document says in order for the project to go ahead, it would likely need to demolish buildings on 126 and 128 Stafford St and the former Olympia Hall at 31 Barnard St. The Stafford St buildings sit between the Factory Bar and Nightclub and the Theatre Royal. ....
