The Hummer H1 came to market as the civilian version of the Humvee military transport. It was big, brash, and powered by a 5.7 petrol engine or a variety of 6.5-liter diesel engines. It arrived in 1992 as a result of campaigning from then soon-to-be California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger after he fell in love with the military version during Operation Desert Storm. Like the Toyota Prius, it became a political statement, but both vehicles were on opposing sides of the fence.
The Prius arrived in 1997 and is still with us, while the H1 ended up on the wrong side of history. The H1 became the poster boy for American excess and arrogance, but Hummer tried to move forward with the smaller H2 and H3 models. However, a small Hummer is still big and thirsty, and there wasn t enough appetite to keep the brand afloat. With rising gas prices, the risk-versus-reward ratio just wasn t there for enough customers. ....

When it comes to classic cars turned dragsters, lots of racers go for the tried-and-true LS V8 swap. It s a flexible platform and it s affordable too, definitely a solid option. But not everyone is hooked on the good ole LS swap. The owner of this 1962 Studebaker Lark went with the more mundane Vortec 4200 and the results are amazing.

I say mundane because the Vortec 4200 is by no means a fabulous engine in stock form. The 4.2-liter inline-six was produced from 2002 to 2009 and fitted in SUVs that most of us have forgotten about. The list includes the GMC Envoy, Oldsmobile Bravada, Buick Rainier, Isuzu Ascender and Saab 9-7X. Oh, and the first-generation Chevrolet TrailBlazer. ....

The General had a healthy sales hit with the GMT360 platform in the 2002 model year, when the new Chevrolet Trailblazer, GMC Envoy, and Oldsmobile Bravada hit the showrooms. Since GM had devoured Saab in 2000 and most American car shoppers wanted trucks or truck-shaped machines by that point, it seemed to make sense to produce a Saab-badged GMT360 and extract some cash from that slice of the car-buying populace that craved both the rugged-lifestyle signifiers of a truck
and the quirky-yet-sensible Swedish image of a Saab. The Isuzu-badged versionâ the Ascenderâ had had its debut for 2004, and so the Saab 9-7X appeared for 2005 (sadly, no Daewoo- or Vauxhall-badged versions were produced).
