Officials call for funding for Arkansas River Navigation System

With a $230 million backlog of maintenance issues on the Arkansas River navigation system, members of Congress from Arkansas, Oklahoma and Kansas have teamed up to request the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) direct funds to the issue.
The delegation also wants the Corps of Engineers to deepen the navigation system s channel from 9 feet to 12 feet to increase barge payloads, as well as address a related issue in southeast Arkansas near the confluence of the Arkansas, White and Mississippi rivers.
Several Fort Smith businesses depend on the river for cheaper delivery of raw materials. In addition to serving as a shipping lane for agriculture and manufacturing products, river barges keep about 400 semi-trucks off the roads for a typical tow of eight barges carrying 12,000 tons, according to the Arkansas Waterways Commission. ....

An autonomous weeder uses lasers to destroy unwanted vegetation growth. Carbon Robotics, an autonomous robotics company, has unveiled its third-generation autonomous weed elimination robots. The Autonomous Weeder Leverages Robotics, artivicial intelligence (AI), and laser technology to safely and effectively drive through crop fields to identify, target and eliminate weeds. Unlike other weeding technologies, the robots utilise high-power lasers to eradicate weeds through thermal energy, without disturbing the soil. The automated robots allow farmers tu use less herbicides and reduce labour to remove unwanted plants.

Brennan Opens A New Location In Paducah, Ky.

La Crosse, Wis.-based dredging, diving and marine construction company J.F. Brennan Company said it established a permanent Mid-South Region presence in Paducah, Ky., and will provide all Brennan services, including above and below-water construction and environmental remediation services.
The Mid-South team consists of locals in the area and is under the leadership of Robert Bob Wheeler, who recently joined Brennan from Shimmick Construction Company, Inc. and most notably worked on the Olmsted Lock & Dam and the LaGrange Lock & Dam Major Rehabilitation projects, both operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
Paducah is well-known as a hub for dry dock, barge and railway operations. Located near the confluence of the Mississippi, Ohio, Cumberland and Tennessee Rivers, the new location enables Brennan to better serve the infrastructure needs of clients along the inland waterways of the U.S., the company said, noting it is looking to e ....
