USDA establishes weekly report to highlight seasonal and perishable product trends

According to the USDA, it will be prepared in close partnership with the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) and the U.S. Department of Commerce (Commerce).
The weekly report is based on data provided by USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) and its Specialty Crops Market News Division.
“With the impact of COVID-19 on the produce industry, it is critical that we keep an eye on marketplace trends for seasonal and perishable products,” said USDA Undersecretary for Marketing and Regulatory Programs Greg Ibach.
“This report will help the federal agencies involved in overseeing the supply chain understand import trends as we work to address industry concerns.” ....

USDA releases report about the importance of highways to U.S. agriculture

IARN  The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) released a report, The Importance of Highways to U.S. Agriculture, prepared in close partnership with the Department of Transportation (DOT). The report was researched and written by DOT’s Volpe National Transportation Systems Center through a cooperative agreement overseen by USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) and its Transportation Services Division.
Agricultural producers are the single largest user of freight services, comprising 17% of freight movements across all transportation modes in dollar value and 33% of all ton-miles (U.S. DOT, BTS, and U.S. Census Bureau, 2017). In 2017, 2.9 billion tons of agricultural products worth $2.5 trillion moved on the freight network. ....

USDA finalizes livestock marketing rule


Fair Competition Livestock Rule ensures producers can continue to use marketing arrangements after 12 years of proposed rules.
In an effort to ensure fair trade and competitive marketing of livestock and poultry, USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service issued a final rule required under the 2008 Farm Bill. The rule has been tossed back and forth between the past two administrations and producer groups still remain mixed on the final product.
The rule clarifies the types of conduct prohibited by the Packers and Stockyards Act and sets forth several criteria the secretary of agriculture will consider when determining whether conduct by packers, swine contractors or live poultry dealers represents an undue or unreasonable preference or advantage. ....
