.-Jack Shainman Gallery is presenting diedrick brackens rhyming positions at the 513 West 20th Street location. The artists second exhibition with the gallery, these eight new weavings continue the explorations of narrative, allegory, and intimacy so fundamental to Brackens practice.
In several tableaux situated in nature, Brackens plays with the idea of creating home in a wild space, honoring the outdoors as a place in which queerness lives. This is a nod to the history of queer and femme folks who have gathered in nature, creating safe spaces for ritual and communion. This notion of commune is present in summer syllables, in which two figures stretch in lyrical movement, seemingly fashioning loops out of their own bodies, as if flowing one into the other within a vast, yellow landscape. In soft, dark, demigod, a figure bends over, caught within a thicket ....

Diedrick Brackens Weaves a Rich Tapestry of Queer Black Life
At Oakville Galleries at Centennial Square in Ontario, the artist combines threads of illness, vulnerability, healing and love in textiles centered on the queer Black body
For his first solo exhibition in Canada, ‘shape of a fever believer’, US artist Diedrick Brackens distils the co-existence of illness, vulnerability, healing and love into a series of tapestries (all 2020) centred on silhouetted Black bodies. The various fabrics are hand-stitched together like quilts, with contrasting – and occasionally fringed – thread. Brackens wrote three poems (‘a storm of bees, wind, affairs between us’, ‘sixty million and more’, and ‘blessed are the mosquitoes’), printed in the exhibition handout, to accompany the weavings, which meditate in verse what the textiles convey materially. ....

Tree. Despite witnessing a clear mastery of medium, I am left feeling flat and wanting more. The social anxieties that loom over our current moment are nowhere to be found in these works, or in the text that accompanies them. Though I am hesitant to make demands on art, I can’t help but question the relevance of an incredibly joyful volume of new work made mostly in 2020 without even the slightest acknowledgement of a broader context.
I find this head-in-the-sand approach accentuated by the 1920s estate cottage architecture of Gairloch Gardens, where the largest of McIntosh’s canvases are hung. With an omnipresent lakeside garden view, the interior includes grapevine moulding, ornately panelled radiators, and an original fireplace. I was relieved to discover that instead of ignoring this far-from-neutral space, McIntosh had the wooden support columns that dominate the central room painted a deep, matte black. She did the same for the more modern columns at Cente ....
