State pitches for UGC recognition for Rajendra varsity | Bhubaneswar News

BHUBANESWAR: Rajendra University’s application for the grant of recognition, following its upgrade to a varsity, was rejected by the University Grants Commission (UGC) last year.
However, the matter came to light on Friday when the higher education department wrote a letter to the commission requesting it to re-examine the issue and grant the recognition to the university situated in Balangir district.
The institution had sought recognition according to Section 2(f) of the UGC Act. The commission provides financial assistance to eligible colleges, which are included in Section 2(f), and declared fit to receive central assistance (UGC grant) under Section 12 (B) of the UGC Act, 1956. ....

BHUBANESWAR: The state government on Wednesday renamed the North Orissa University in Baripada as Maharaja Sriram Chandra Banja Deo University.
The state government is celebrating the 150th birth anniversary of the erstwhile Mayurbhanj king, who is known to have done a lot for the district.
The department of higher education issued a gazette notification that said, “In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (c) of sub-section (1) of section-32 of the Odisha Universities Act, 1989 (Odisha Act 5 of 1989), the state government has changed the name of the North Orissa University as Maharaja Sriram Chandra Bhanja Deo university with effect from December 23, 2020.” ....

Odisha made news recently for an unusual final test to choose vice-chancellors for several universities in the state. The shortlisted candidates – all presumably highly qualified, experienced and senior academicians – were handed over a question paper as they were waiting presumably for their interview with the Chancellor – the Governor. It was unusual on several counts and has rightly raised the eyebrows of many eminent academicians and intellectuals. The Chancellor was dealing with a personal tragedy and couldn’t attend to the scheduled interviews. Instead, an official conducted the test with four questions – “The universe is built on…?”, “The role of the university to build the universe?”, “You have work experience. The style of working? The spirit of working?”, “If God appears before you and asks for a boon, what will you like to ask for?” The questions were to be addressed in under 45 minutes in a phy ....
