Matt Beuschlein: How have the first few months been as the executive director of the OOCC?
Robin Rickard: “Now that the COVID numbers are going down, we want to take on a more aggressive role. Last week we were with the lieutenant governor in Baltimore County here in Maryland and we launched the Maryland SOS which stands for Stop Overdose Strategy.
We never stopped fighting the opioid crisis even during the pandemic, but now that we are healing from COVID, the state of Maryland is going to take an even more aggressive approach in combating the opioid crisis. We are excited to launch Maryland SOS. Together with our state, local, and community partners, we are going to keep fighting this fight.” ....

HAGERSTOWN, Md. A total of 2,499 Marylanders lost their lives in opioid-related deaths last year, according to a new state report. It is the largest annual total on record. Allegany, Prince George’s and Washington Counties saw some of the larger increases in the state. ....

Preliminary data from 2020 reveals a dramatic increase in deaths linked with opioids in Maryland, particularly fentanyl, and health officials cite the pandemic as a major factor.
The number of unintentional intoxication overdoses those involving all drugs and alcohol rose 18.7% to 2,773 in 2020 from 2,379 in 2019, according to data collected by the Maryland Department of Health.
In more than 90% of cases, opioids were detected in bodies postmortem, the highest rate recorded in the state’s history of collecting this data.
While too early to formally determine the extent to which COVID-19 has influenced this increase, experts agree the pandemic is likely to blame for the widespread increase in drug use. ....
