Denise Ransom has walked through a lot of buildings.
As a child, she followed her father Leon Ransom through the buildings he designed. Ransom was a well-known Columbus architect responsible for many local buildings, including the Christopher Inn, Ohio State University East Hospital and the Martin Luther King Branch of the Columbus Metropolitan Library.
Although her father died at age 42 when Ransom was 15, she remembers the lessons he taught her about building design. They are lessons she applies today to her business, Elite National Building Services, a commercial cleaning firm.
“One of his things, and I remember this distinctly from walking Martin Luther King library with him, he said the building was designed to make it easy to clean,” Ransom recalls. “That stuck with me, as I see some of the buildings now.” ....

YWCA of Columbus honors 7 in latest Women of Achievement class

Saturday mornings were not always relaxed in Mary Howard’s youth.
“My mother would take us to nursing homes to visit residents, so we didn’t always stay in jammies and watch cartoons,” said Howard, the executive director of Ohio State University East Hospital. “It didn’t take long for me to see how those visits impacted their lives, and that really cultivated in me a passion for caregiving.”
Howard is one of seven women being honored this year as YWCA Women of Achievement. In its 36th year, the award is given to women not only for their work, but also exemplifying YWCA Columbus’s mission of eliminating racism and empowering women. ....

Ohio State University doctors pushed for caution after researchers announced the discovery of a Columbus coronavirus strain Wednesday that they said is likely more contagious than previous variants of the disease.
The strain, according to the medical center, is similar to the one discovered in the United Kingdom, but likely originated in the U.S. The discovery of the Columbus variant, COH.20G/501Y, suggests that the same mutation may be occurring independently in multiple parts of the world during the past few months, according to the medical center. ....

New coronavirus cases leaped in Utah in the week ending Saturday, rising 25.6% as 22,069 cases were reported. The previous week had 17,576 new cases of the virus that causes COVID-19.
Utah ranked No. 6 among the states where coronavirus was spreading the fastest on a per-person basis, a USA TODAY Network analysis of Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the latest week the United States added 1,698,484 reported cases of coronavirus, an increase of 18% from the week before. Across the country, 46 states had more cases in the latest week than they did in the week before. ....
