NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. The emerging fleet of U.S. military Large Unmanned Surface Vessels (LUSV) are set to navigate the open seas, avoid other vessels and carry out complex directives from a land-based command center over a secure commutations network. What they can’t do yet is pump their own gas.
For the foreseeable future, the LUSVs will require a small crew detachment aboard to carry out tasks not conducive to machines. ....

A second medium-sized unmanned surface vessel prototype has delivered to the Navy, builder Leidos announced this week.
Sea Hawk, sister ship to the Navy’s Sea Hunter, was built on the Gulf Coast and is now bound to join the Navy’s Surface Development Squadron One in California, the company said in a Wednesday press release.
In 2017, the Office of Naval research awarded Leidos a $35.5 million contract to build the 145-ton trimaran as a follow-up to the original L3-built Sea Hunter that was developed by DARPA as a high-endurance platform to track submarines. ....

The Navy and Marines Need a Missile Cutter

General David H. Berger’s
Commandant’s Planning Guidance (CPG) says “The Marine Corps will be trained and equipped as a naval expeditionary force-in-readiness and prepared to operate inside actively contested maritime spaces in support of fleet operations.” The CPG also highlights force design and the need to divest the Corps of legacy equipment and programs that do not meet future requirements. And it repositions the Marine Corps’ Fleet Marine Forces under the operational control of the Fleet Commander.
As the naval service reflects on potential operations inside an adversary’s antiaccess/area-denial (A2/AD) weapons engagement zone, it needs to consider what systems and platforms will be required. The amphibious fleet and littoral maneuver craft must be more agile and more lethal, present reduced signatures, be more specialized and affordable/maintainable, and some may be optionally manned. ....

The experimental unmanned Sea Hunter is the forerunner of the Navy’s proposed fleet of robotic warships.
WASHINGTON: The Navy is working on designs for its future Large and Medium Unmanned Surface Vessels that would allow them to support small crews for limited and specific missions, the service’s top unmanned systems officer said today.
Capt. Pete Small told the virtual Surface Navy convention that the Large USV will remain “essentially unmanned,” but will be equipped with room to berth a small crew to help getting underway and returning to a pier, refueling and doing repair work at sea. The Medium USV will not have the capacity to carry any sailors, however  ....
