San Diego Teachers Learned Lessons During Pandemic

Ensign also learned she can adapt.
“This has been an opportunity for teachers to really embrace the technology, Ensign said. Even if they ve been hesitant to do it before now, you kind of had to do it. You had to get in the technology pool.”
Ensign said her experiences during the pandemic have made her a better teacher.
“I think all adversity makes you better, Ensign says. I mean, you cry, but it makes you better, it makes you stronger. You learn from it, hopefully.”

Jim “Mouse” Robb, a legendary San Diego surfer who started riding waves in the 1940s on 70-pound longboards made out of redwood, and who became a father figure to dozens of local lifeguards and assorted water rats, died April 22, one day shy of his 88th birthday.
His impact, especially in Ocean Beach, inspired a bumper sticker, “Mouse Would Go,” which nods to his eagerness to surf even the biggest waves, and to his willingness to help people as a mentor, electrician, and do-whatever-it-takes volunteer.
“We all tried to be like him,” said Lee Edging, a building inspection supervisor and former president of the Sunset Cliffs Surfing Association, a club Robb helped start that emphasized community service almost as much as wave-chasing and became a template for similar organizations in Southern California. ....

Pandemic Played a Role in Teacher's Decision to Retire Early

Burchett said she s grateful to the district for offering early retirement to teachers and other employees at this time.
“I feel happy for new beginnings and sad that I ll miss all my little students, teaching and watching that light bulb go off, Burchett said. It’s the best part of teaching.”
After 25 years of teaching, Burchett received a big send-off, including a retirement video from students at Ocean Beach Elementary School where Burchett has taught for seven years.
“It made me bawl . it was bittersweet, Burchett said. It s very bittersweet.”
Besides health concerns, Burchett said Zoom fatigue played a role in her decision. ....
