The Revolutionary War colonel and aide de camp to Gen. George Washington made that statement more than a decade after the Continental Congress first instituted the tradition of issuing medals to recognize and show appreciation for distinguished military service in 1776. McCall becomes Rear Admiral in Navy


WASHINGTON – With only 2% of all naval officers making flag rank, Cherokee Nation citizen Wesley McCall recently made rank as rear admiral (lower half) in the U.S. Navy after 31 years of service.
“It’s a big honor for me to be honest with you,” McCall said. “It’s a big shock. But it’s just, I guess, it’s just a testament to all the hard work that you put in. You’ve learned along the way and I guess that the Navy has noticed that and that’s based on what all these flag officers have to offer.”
Growing up in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, and graduating high school in 1986, McCall said the interest to enter the armed services came from his father. ....
