An Evansville cyclist killed in an accident in St. Augustine, Florida, on Sunday, has been identified as Troy Manz, a 46-year-old military veteran and doctor in residency. He was among three cyclists who were hit by a car riding while riding on U.S. 1 in the dark hours of Sunday morning as part of the Sea to Sea Expedition Race, an intense three-day adventure-racing event from one coast of Florida to the other. The Florida Highway Patrol said Manz died at the scene. The other cyclists were his fiancée, Trish Wilkinson, and Barbara Gilmore. Both of the women were taken to University of Florida Health Hospital with serious injuries. ....
Manz s death has sparked an outpouring of grief and condolences on social media. He worked at the Indiana University School of Medicine Southwest Indiana Internal Medicine Residency Program at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes and Ascension St. Vincent Evansville, according to a Facebook post from the university. Manz served eight years in the Marines, according to the university. He was actively involved in the 126th Medical Group Air National Guard. “It was an honor to work with Dr. Manz, who was trusted and admired by his fellow residents,” Dr. Robert Ficalora, program director of the Southwest Indiana Internal Medicine Residency, said in the post. “He was an amazing force of life. From flying the injured out of Afghanistan, service in the Air National Guard, or caring for his patients, he was about service above self.” ....
