After nearly five years of construction, the Shanghai Astronomy Museum, believed to be the world s largest of its kind, will finally open its doors to the public on July 18, the museum said on Monday.
Located in Shanghai s coastal Lingang area, the museum covers 38,000 square meters.
From above, the museum resembles two connected planetary orbits, with a spherical theater sitting on one side and an inverted spherical dome on the other.
The majority of astronomy museums in the world are about 20,000 square meters, so this is arguably the largest in the world. It will be able to host visits by around 6,000 people a day, said Lin Qing, director of the museum s research center. ....

Christie's to sell Isaac Newton's handwritten notes for greatest work


Handwritten notes that show one of history s greatest scientific minds in action are going up for auction in London.
Pages containing Isaac Newton s jotted revisions to his masterwork, the Principia, are expected to sell next month for between 600,000 pounds and 900,000 pounds (USD 850,000 and USD 1.3 million), auctioneer Christie s said Tuesday.
Published in 1687, Newton s Philosophiae naturalis principia mathematica Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy set out the laws of gravitation and motion and is considered a scientific watershed. A first edition of the book sold at auction for USD 3.7 million in 2016.
Thomas Venning, head of books and manuscripts at Christie s in London, said the book reinvented our understanding of the universe. ....
