450 seniors say 'goodbye' to high school careers in Belton | Copperas Cove Herald

BELTON — The crowd of parents, friends and loved ones roared on May 28 as the Copperas Cove High School band began to play the traditional graduation tune “Pomp and Circumstance.”
The crowd’s roars drowned out the periodic loud rumbles of thunder that shook through the Bell County Expo Center in Belton.
In total, 450 seniors filed into their seats on the floor in preparation for walking across the stage.
Several of the Class of 2021’s seniors offered their thoughts on the excitement about having an in-person graduation.
“This year, at first, it was kind of disappointing with football season having games canceled left and right, especially because I’m a cheerleader and that’s one of my happiest moments of the year,” said Isabella Dickson. “But I’m actually very excited we got to have a normal prom, a normal graduation. I’m really happy.” ....

COPPERAS COVE — To mask or not to mask? That is the question — or option — now facing parents of Copperas Cove ISD students, as well as faculty and staff, heading into the 2021-2022 school year.
In a unanimous vote, 7-0, the Copperas Cove ISD board of trustees approved a request by Superintendent Joe Burns to repeal the district’s mask mandate, effective July 1.
Trustee Jeff Gorres vocally cast his vote via telephone as he was unable to be at the meeting in person.

Cove ISD board to consider repealing mask mandate

If the Copperas Cove Independent School District board of trustees concurs with a request by Superintendent Joe Burns, face coverings will no longer be required in campus buildings, effective July 1.
Burns is expected to ask for approval from the board Tuesday to repeal the current mask mandate in the district, according to the meeting agenda.
“In an attempt to assist our community, CCISD has partnered with the City of Copperas Cove, Coryell Health, Advent Health Systems, and the DSHS to provide seven opportunities for CCISD employees, age eligible students and community members to receive the COVID vaccine in Copperas Cove,” Burns said in an action sheet attached to the agenda. “With these efforts and the efforts of local medical providers and pharmacies we are now seeing very low incidences of COVID-19 infections among our students, staff and in the community.” ....

Cove school board moves forward with asbestos abatement projects

Asbestos will soon be abated from three elementary schools in Copperas Cove as the district continues to plan renovations to the older school buildings.
“When you get into these older elementary schools or older campuses, one of the things we run into is asbestos,” said Superintendent Joe Burns as he addressed the board. “Asbestos can really only be abated in the summer, because we don’t want to have people there.”
In order to ensure the safety of staff and students of Mae Stevens Early Learning Academy, Martin Walker Elementary and Hettie Halstead Elementary, the school district must pay for the removal of the asbestos material. ....
