Here is what you need to know.
Face coverings
The board confirmed that mask wearing may be required for the start of school this fall due to the COVID-19 Delta variant, although no official decision has been made.
Board member Arlen Diercks said, “We are aware of the masking issues, more than likely we will be needing to wear masks.”
During the discussion, a motion was made by Board Vice Chair Jim Bryant to not require masks in September, which failed 3-2 with Holly Tauer and Nicky Buck absent from the meeting.
Board members Anna Ostendorf, Jennifer Tift and Diercks agreed that more information from the district’s COVID-19 Response Team is needed to make the final decision. ....

Hubbard School of Journalism calls for better treatment of journalists during local protests

The statement reads:
“Recent civil unrest in Minneapolis and St. Paul has drawn national attention to the relationship between media, protestors and law enforcement officials. The Hubbard School of Journalism and Mass Communication is a School dedicated to teaching students and training professionals to be leaders in their fields and to be thoughtful, productive citizens in their communities and in public life.

Red Wing School District will address native students' needs | News

An impassioned Nicky Buck urged fellow Red Wing School Board members to start meeting Native American students’ needs.
The board met on April 19 and approved a response to the American Indian Parent Advisory Committee’s (AIPAC) findings presented March 8. The AIPAC issued a resolution of non-concurrence, which means that committee members determined the district has not been meeting American Indian students’ needs as required under state law.
“The district did fail me by not setting up things for me to learn the way that I learn with my culture, my traditions and my language,” Buck said. “And now, as I m watching that next generation come up you know, like I said I pulled my own kids from the school so I can engulf them with their culture, traditions and language so that way when they get in that outside world that they re not struggling to survive. So I really appreciate everybody s time and effort into this.” ....
