Even when students do attend in person, the Ripley school has an empty feeling.
Here is the real problem with the public sector’s perception of the $16 billion deficit that is currently facing New York state. It can be summed up in three words: Ripley Central Schools.
Smallest of the 18 Chautauqua County districts, serving less than 160 students from prekindergarten to grade six, officials and elected board members are in the midst of moving forward with plans for a nearly $3 million capital project. “No final decisions have been made and we’re still putting all the pieces in place,” said Superintendent William Caldwell recently. “If we go forward, the Board of Education isn’t scheduled to approve the project until June and the public vote wouldn’t take place until September.” ....

Ogdensburg, Watertown get failing grades for improper school board executive sessions

WATERTOWN — Under the general premise that members of the public should be able to have an idea of what will be discussed in executive sessions during school board meetings, the New York Coalition for Open Government conducted a study of 20 school districts across the state to see whether their executive sessions were being conducted properly.
Each was given a letter grade ranging from A to F. Both Ogdensburg and Watertown, along with 10 other districts, received failing grades. Only Buffalo and Kingston received A grades.
Meeting minutes of the 20 school boards were viewed from Jan. 1, 2020, through June 30. The school boards covered by the study and subsequent report span the state and include Albany, Amsterdam, Auburn, Binghamton, Brookhaven-Comsewogue, Buffalo, Canandaigua, Elmira, Hempstead, Jamestown, Kingston, New York City, Niagara Falls, Ogdensburg, Rochester, Schenectady, Syracuse, Utica, Watertown and Yonkers. ....

Controversy Surrounds Prince George's County Exec's School Board Appointments

“When politicians make decisions that have nothing to do with students, our entire system suffers,” Burroughs said.
Under state law, the county executive can appoint the chair and vice chair. Two years ago, Alsobrooks allowed the board to choose the vice chair, and it selected Burroughs.
In a letter to Alsobrooks, seven board members requested Burroughs be reappointed.
“If seven out of nine elected members are requesting to appoint someone as vice chair, I would think that any person who wants this to work would listen to that,” he said.
Alsobrooks responded with a letter saying elected member Sonja Williams was her choice and went on to say, “As we recover from this pandemic, we have urgent business ahead of us, so I respectfully request that we keep our conversations and efforts focused on our children, their parents and the teachers who educate them. Put plainly, I’m only interested in talking about the success of our kids and not expanding, protecti ....
