AI-assisted video analysis can help doctors to diagnose Parkinson's disease at an early stage

AI-assisted video analysis can help doctors to diagnose Parkinson’s disease at an early stage
Feb 12 2021
Scientists from Skoltech and A.I. Burnazyan Federal Medical and Biophysical Center have designed and developed a second opinion system, based on AI-assisted video analysis, which can help medical professionals to objectively assess patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD) even at an early stage. This approach can help avoid misdiagnosing this disease, distinguishing between its stages, adjusting therapy and recommending diagnosed patients for deep brain stimulation surgery. The paper was published in
IEEE Sensors Journal.
A growing number of people with neurodegenerative diseases, due to population aging, will mean that in the coming decades, humanity might face a bona fide ‘Parkinson’s disease pandemic’. PD, currently the fastest growing neurodegenerative disease, affects the patients’ quality of life quite severely and needs to be diagnosed as accu ....

Researchers receive $1,894,271 grant to address new drug targets for diastolic dysfunction

Researchers receive $1,894,271 grant to address new drug targets for diastolic dysfunction
After the left ventricle of the heart contracts, it must relax efficiently to prepare to refill and supply the body with blood on the next beat. An increasing number of patients including nearly all patients with heart failure suffer from impaired relaxation, which is part of a clinical syndrome known as diastolic dysfunction. Currently, treatments for impaired relaxation do not exist.
A team of Wayne State University School of Medicine researchers led by Charles Chung, Ph.D., assistant professor of physiology, recently received a $1,894,271 grant from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health to address the critical need for new drug targets and diagnostic indexes for diastolic dysfunction using novel biomechanical tests that ultimately can be translated into clinical practice. ....

Novel tool guides evaluation of patients who develop COVID-19 symptoms

Novel tool guides evaluation of patients who develop COVID-19 symptoms
When patients arrive in emergency departments and hospitals with symptoms consistent with COVID-19, it s critical to isolate them to avoid the potential spread of infection, but keeping patients isolated longer than needed could delay patient care, take up hospital beds needed for other patients, and unnecessarily use up personal protective equipment.
A team led by investigators at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) has now created a tool to guide frontline clinicians through diagnostic evaluations of such patients so that they ll know when it s safe to discontinue precautions. The tool was developed and validated in a study published in ....

HKBU and CUHK jointly develop Spermine Risk Score for diagnosis of prostate cancer

HKBU and CUHK jointly develop Spermine Risk Score for diagnosis of prostate cancer
Feb 8 2021
Researchers from Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) and the Faculty of Medicine at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CU Medicine) have jointly developed the Spermine Risk Score which, coupled with the use of a urine test, provides a non-invasive and more reliable method for the diagnosis of prostate cancer. In a study conducted by the researchers, about 37% of the patients, who were ultimately found to have no prostate cancer, can avoid undergoing a prostate biopsy procedure. The findings have just been published in the scientific journal ....
