Black students call for University support amid police violence

Students call on the University to cancel its plans for the private police force as acts of police brutality continue nationwide. 
The Office of Diversity and Inclusion hosted “Addressing Hate During COVID-19” on April 23 to discuss nationwide calls for racial justice. The event was sparked by the conviction of Derek Chauvin, the Minneapolis police officer charged with the murder of George Floyd last summer, and followed the fatal shooting of Daunte Wright, a 20-year-old Black man, in Brooklyn Center, Minn., on April 11.

Applications open for the University's Innovation Fund to reduce city violence

The News-Letter, Szeszko argued that the University should consider the feasibility of the projects amid the COVID-19 pandemic when evaluating proposals.
“A project proposal may appear to benefit the community, but it may not follow safety guidelines,” he wrote. “Due to social distancing and limits on how many can gather in a group, it is likely that meetings will be limited, leading to less communication that is essential for the program to work. The University should provide the communities with clear guidelines and the means to either meet safely in-person or online.”
