Mammography underutilized in Jamaica


In a study led by Dr. Sheray A. Chin from the University of the West Indies at Mona, Jamaica, researchers found that many women who presented for a mammogram for the study had never undergone one before, despite being over the age when annual mammograms are recommended.
Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer and cancer-related deaths in Jamaican women. In Jamaica, women often present with advanced stages of breast cancer, despite the availability of screening mammography for early detection.
It has been reported that less than 5% of Jamaican women eligible for mammographic screening actually have mammograms, and local studies have explored the deterrents to mammographic screening, the authors wrote. ....

Telediagnostic ultrasound successful in Peru pilot study


April 30, 2021 A new telediagnostic ultrasound protocol that doesn t need a trained sonographer or high-speed internet showed success in a pilot program held in Peru. The study was presented at this month s virtual American Roentgen Ray Society (ARRS) meeting.
Researchers from the University of Rochester developed a scanning protocol that could be performed by staff in the field with minimal training, with images sent over low-bandwidth connections for interpretation by experts. Imaging readers reported a high level of satisfaction with the images.
For the majority of the world that lacks access to diagnostic imaging, this could really improve the health of the global community by giving them access, said Dr. Thomas Marini from the University of Rochester. ....

April 26, 2021 Both patients and primary care physicians (PCPs) reported an increase in how well patients understood their medical conditions following virtual visits with radiologists in a study presented April 22 at the virtual American Roentgen Ray Society (ARRS) meeting.
Researchers from Massachusetts General Hospital said the findings indicate that collaboration between radiologists, primary care physicians, and patients can result in better patient care.
Initiatives led by the RSNA and American College of Radiology have emphasized the role of radiologists in patient-centered care. But most patients discuss radiology exam findings with their referring provider and do not communicate directly with radiologists for their imaging results. ....
