Critical systemic reforms starting, but experts are sceptical
The Angolan government has been implementing several measures to improve the negative reputation of its higher education system, such as stricter accreditation and assessment laws, but experts say these changes need to be implemented more comprehensively.
Since President João Lourenço took office in 2017 after almost 38 years under José Eduardo dos Santos’ command, the country has seen significant change. This includes anti-corruption cases against former ministers and generals, more civil liberties and the privatisation of more than 190 companies – all unthinkable under dos Santos, a leftist who rewarded party loyalty.
Among the changes planned are improvements to the quality of a higher education sector that was expanded significantly between 2009 and 2010 (including the launch of additional private bodies). ....

(Bloomberg) African central bankers meeting in the next two weeks amid a resurgent coronavirus may find they’ve used up most of their interest-rate ammunition to lift their economies out of recessions that still affect much of the continent.
Monetary policy committees have limited scope to provide stimulus after aggressive easing when lockdowns first shuttered output in 2020, with inflation quickening in Nigeria and Angola and restrictions that would dull the impact of rate cuts continuing in South Africa and Kenya. ....

African central bankers meeting in the next two weeks amid a resurgent coronavirus may find they’ve used up most of their interest-rate ammunition to lift their economies out of recessions that still affect much of the continent.
Monetary policy committees have limited scope to provide stimulus after aggressive easing when lockdowns first shuttered output in 2020, with inflation quickening in Nigeria and Angola and restrictions that would dull the impact of rate cuts continuing in South Africa and Kenya.
“I don’t think there is scope for strategic easing of monetary policy in 2021,” said Jibran Qureishi, the head of Africa research at the Standard Bank Group. “In the event that economic activity remains sluggish, a bias to cut will persist, but any cuts from these levels will be token.” ....
