ROI blasted for 'cynical' criminalisation of public worship

Church leaders in the Republic of Ireland have slammed its Government for temporarily making public worship a criminal offence.
The country’s four Roman Catholic Archbishops are seeking legal advice after they said the Health Minister “clandestinely” introduced the ban last week.
The measures outlaw services with congregations, except for weddings and funerals, and a breach of the law could result in up to six months imprisonment. The restrictions are due to be reviewed on 4 May.
‘Cynical’
Roman Catholic Archbishop Eamon Martin called the move “a breach of trust” after he said the Government assured them earlier this month that they “understood the importance of faith and worship to the people of Ireland”. ....

The Catholic Archbishop Eamon Martin and the Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly have met to discuss the publication of a Statutory Instrument which affects public worship.
Archbishop Martin told Minister Donnelly there were concerns expressed with regard to the criminalising of leading, and gathering for, public worship at this time in Ireland despite the consistent support from the churches for public health messaging since the beginning of the pandemic. ....

Around 600 people complained about the New Year s Countdown Show clip, and Catholic Archbishop Eamon Martin s called it deeply offensive .

RTE has apologised to anyone who was offended by the sketch, and says formal complaints will be accepted, and responded to within the relevant process. The comedy clip from Waterford Whispers contains a person dressed as a Garda escorting a handcuffed bearded man dressed in white robes out of the Court House in Waterford. A voiceover alleges that God forced himself on a young migrant girl, and also alleges that he impregnated her against her will. Archbishop Eamon Martin said on social media that it was offensive and blasphemous, he also called for it to be removed from any on-demand services.
